Northern Circuit Route

Overview

The Northern Circuit Route is the newest and longest path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. At Alizeti Adventures, we consider this the “grand tour” of the mountain. This route offers the most complete wilderness experience available. It circles the quiet northern slopes, far away from the busier southern trails. Because of its length, it provides the best acclimatization profile of any route.

Our seasoned guides prefer this route for its unparalleled safety and success. The extended 9-day duration allows your body to adjust slowly to the altitude. Consequently, Alizeti Adventures maintains a 98% summit success rate on this expedition. We focus on providing a robust and realistic journey. We combine expert physiological monitoring with a pace that respects the mountain. This is the ideal choice for those who want the highest chance of reaching the top.

day-day itinerary

Day 1: The Western Rainforest Entry

The expedition begins at the Londorossi Gate (2,100m). First, our team handles all park formalities. Then, we drive to the Lemosho glades to start the trek. We walk for about three to four hours through the lush montane forest. The trail is often misty and vibrant with life. We conclude the day at Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820m). Our guides emphasize a slow pace from the very start. This sets the foundation for your long-term success.

Today, we leave the forest behind. The trail steepens as we enter the moorland zone. We climb the Shira Ridge and then drop gently onto the Shira Plateau. This five-to-six-hour trek offers your first clear views of the Kibo peak. We set up camp at Shira 1 (3,500m). During the evening, our guides perform health checks. We monitor your oxygen levels to ensure a safe transition to higher altitudes.

We spend the day crossing the expansive Shira Plateau. The walk is relatively flat but vital for acclimatization. Over four to five hours, we move toward the center of the mountain. We arrive at Shira 2 Camp (3,850m) by early afternoon. This extra time at 3,800 meters is crucial. It allows your body to stabilize before we move into the alpine desert. The views of the Western Breach from here are truly spectacular.

Today, we follow the “Climb High, Sleep Low” principle. We ascend toward the Lava Tower (4,630m) for a hot lunch. This spike in altitude stimulates your red blood cell production. Afterward, we diverge from the main trail. Instead of heading south, we turn north toward Moir Hut (4,200m). This secluded camp is tucked away in the Lent Hills. It offers a peaceful environment for further acclimatization.

We begin our traverse of the quiet northern slopes. The trail winds through a stark alpine desert landscape. This five-to-seven-hour trek is relatively untouched by other climbers. We reach Buffalo Camp (4,020m) by late afternoon. The views looking north toward the Kenyan plains are endless. Our guides use this time to review your physical state. We ensure everyone is recovering well for the upcoming summit push.

The journey continues across the northern ridges. We cross several valleys as we head toward the eastern side of Kibo. The four-to-six-hour trek leads us to the Third Cave (3,875m). Although we lose a small amount of altitude, this is intentional. It provides your body with a “recovery night” in more oxygen-rich air. This strategy is a key part of our high success rate. It ensures you remain strong for the final days.

Today, we climb toward our high camp at School Hut (4,800m). The four-to-five-hour trek takes us back into the high alpine desert. The terrain is rocky and windswept. We arrive early in the afternoon to maximize our rest. Our guides help you prepare your summit gear. We serve an early dinner and encourage you to sleep by 6:00 PM. This is the final preparation before the midnight assault.

The summit push begins at midnight. We navigate the steep, frozen slopes of the northern face. This is the most demanding part of the expedition. We reach the crater rim at Gilman’s Point (5,685m) by dawn. Then, we continue the final traverse to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). After celebrating at the summit, we descend to Barafu for a rest. Finally, we continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for our last night.

The final morning is a gentle descent through the rainforest. The air is thick with oxygen and the scents of the forest. We reach the Mweka Gate in about 3-4 hours. Here, we finalize the park formalities and receive your summit certificates. Our team joins you for a final celebratory lunch. We then provide a private transfer back to your hotel. You return with the pride of having conquered Kilimanjaro via its most complete route.
