Marangu Route

Overview

The Marangu Route, often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the oldest and most established path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the only route that offers communal hut accommodation instead of camping, making it an attractive option for those who prefer a solid roof over their heads.

At Alizeti Adventures, we recognize that while Marangu is perceived as “easier,” its success rates are historically the lowest on the mountain due to the rapid ascent favored by budget operators.
To rectify this, Alizeti Adventures exclusively offers a 6-day Marangu itinerary. We reject the standard 5-day “express” climb, which has a success rate of less than 50%. By adding a mandatory acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, we transform this route into a robust and realistic expedition. Our approach focuses on the “walk high, sleep low” principle even within the constraints of the hut system, allowing our guests to achieve a success rate of over 85% on this classic trail.

day-day itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate – Trek to Mandara Hut (2,700 m)

The journey begins at the Marangu Gate (1,870m), the historic headquarters of Kilimanjaro National Park. After the necessary registration, we enter the montane forest. The trail is well-maintained and offers a gentle incline through lush greenery, where blue monkeys and tropical birds are frequently spotted. This four-to-five-hour trek serves as a perfect introduction to the mountain’s environment. We conclude the day at Mandara Huts (2,720m), where you can explore the nearby Maundi Crater for your first panoramic views of the Northern Tanzania landscape.

We depart Mandara and soon leave the forest canopy behind, emerging into the high moorland zone. The terrain opens up into expansive grasslands dotted with giant lobelia and groundsel. The six-to-eight-hour trek to Horombo Huts (3,720m) is a steady climb that offers spectacular views of both Kibo and the jagged Mawenzi peaks. Our guides maintain a disciplined “Pole Pole” pace, ensuring that your body begins the vital process of adjusting to the 3,700-meter mark. Horombo is the largest hut complex on the mountain, providing a social atmosphere for trekkers from around the world.

This is the day that sets Alizeti Adventures apart. Instead of pushing toward the high camp, we remain at Horombo for a dedicated acclimatization day. We lead a four-hour hike toward the Mawenzi Ridge, stopping at the striking “Zebra Rocks”—volcanic formations streaked with white mineral deposits. We reach an altitude of approximately 4,100 meters before returning to Horombo for lunch and rest. This strategic “climb high, sleep low” maneuver is the primary reason our guests feel significantly stronger during the summit push than those on the 5-day itinerary.

The trek from Horombo to Kibo Hut (4,700m) takes us across “The Saddle,” a high-altitude desert plateau that connects the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. This six-to-seven-hour journey is starkly beautiful but demanding due to the thinning air and lack of vegetation. Kibo Hut is a stone structure located at the base of the summit cone. Upon arrival, our guides conduct a final equipment check and a detailed briefing for the midnight ascent. An early dinner is served, and we encourage total rest to prepare for the final 1,200-meter climb.

The summit push begins at midnight, navigating the steep, frozen scree of the summit cone. This is a test of endurance and mental fortitude. We reach the crater rim at Gilman’s Point (5,685m) just as the sun begins to rise over the African plains. While many trekkers stop here, our guides will encourage and support you for the final 1.5-hour traverse around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). After standing at the highest point in Africa, we begin the long descent back to Kibo Hut for a brief rest, eventually returning to Horombo Huts for a final night of celebratory rest.

The final day is a long but rewarding descent from Horombo back to the Marangu Gate. As you move back through the moorland and into the rainforest, the increasing oxygen levels provide a natural boost to your energy. The six-hour walk is a time to share stories with your fellow trekkers and guides. At the gate, you will receive your official summit certificates, green for Gilman’s Point and gold for Uhuru Peak. We conclude the expedition with a celebratory lunch before providing a private transfer back to your hotel for a well-deserved celebration.

Safety, Sustainability, & Service Standards

Alizeti Adventures brings a level of professionalism to the Marangu Route that is often missing from “budget” hut treks. Our guides are all certified Wilderness First Responders (WFR) and carry emergency oxygen and pulse oximeters to every hut.

We also maintain strict standards for our porter crews through our partnership with the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP). Even in the communal hut environment, our private chefs prepare fresh, high-quality meals to ensure you have the optimal fuel for your ascent. With Alizeti, the “Coca-Cola Route” becomes a world-class mountaineering experience.
