Machame Route

Overview

The Machame Route, affectionately known as the “Whiskey Route,” is the most popular choice for trekkers seeking a balance between scenic beauty and a challenging physical experience. At Alizeti Adventures, we recommend the 7-day variation of this route for those who want the classic Kilimanjaro experience with a slightly more aggressive pace than Lemosho, yet with built-in acclimatization features that far surpass the shorter routes.

The Machame Route is celebrated for its “Climb High, Sleep Low” profile, which is naturally integrated into the trail’s geography. While many budget operators attempt to compress this route into six days, Alizeti Adventures insists on a 7-day itinerary. This extra day at Karanga Camp is the decisive factor for many of our guests, allowing the body to recover before the final midnight assault. With our seasoned guides leading the way, we maintain a 95% summit success rate on this route, combining expert pacing with rigorous safety protocols.

day-day itinerary

Day 1: Machame Gate - Machame Camp

The expedition begins at the Machame Gate (1,800m), situated at the base of the mountain’s southwestern slope. After completing the necessary park registration, we enter the lush, emerald canopy of the montane rainforest. The trail can be damp and misty, adding an ethereal quality to the five-to-seven-hour trek. Our guides provide constant encouragement and technical advice on navigating the potentially slippery terrain. We conclude the day at Machame Camp (2,835m), where our team has already prepared your camp and a warm evening meal.

On the second day, we leave the forest behind as the trail steepens and enters the moorland zone. The trek involves crossing several ridges and a rocky path that leads toward the Shira Plateau. Over the course of four to six hours, you will witness the vegetation transition from tall trees to giant heather and lobelia. Upon reaching Shira 2 Camp (3,850m), the landscape opens up to reveal breathtaking views of Kibo and the Western Breach. Our guides utilize this afternoon for a pulse-oximetry check and a briefing on the “Climb High, Sleep Low” strategy that defines the following day.

This is a critical day for acclimatization. We depart Shira 2 and head east toward the Lava Tower (4,630m), a massive volcanic formation. This five-to-seven-hour trek takes you into the alpine desert zone, where the air is noticeably thinner. We enjoy a hot lunch at the base of the tower to allow your body to experience the 4,600-meter altitude.

Following lunch, we descend into the Barranco Valley to camp at 3,940m. This descent is vital; it “tricks” the body into adapting to higher altitudes while allowing for a restful night’s sleep in a more oxygen-rich environment.

The morning begins with the legendary scramble up the Great Barranco Wall. At Alizeti Adventures, we view the wall not as an obstacle, but as a highlight of the trek. Our guides provide hands-on assistance, ensuring everyone navigates the “Kissing Rock” and other sections safely.

Once atop the wall, the trail traverses a series of hills and valleys before descending into the Karanga Valley. We conclude the four-to-five-hour trek at Karanga Camp (3,995m). By choosing the 7-day itinerary, we stay here overnight, providing an essential recovery period that 6-day trekkers miss.

The trek to Barafu Camp (4,673m) is a three-to-four-hour climb through the stark, windswept alpine desert. Barafu is our “Base Camp,” perched on a narrow, rocky ridge. This afternoon is dedicated to “Summit Prep.”

Our guides help you organize your layers, headlamps, and hydration systems. We serve an early dinner at 5:00 PM to ensure you get several hours of sleep before the midnight wake-up call. The atmosphere at Barafu is one of quiet focus and anticipation as the entire team prepares for the final push.

The summit push begins at approximately midnight. Under the guidance of our lead experts, you will navigate the steep switchbacks of the scree slopes. This is the most mentally and physically demanding part of the journey. We aim to reach Stella Point (5,756m) just as the sun begins to rise, painting the glaciers in shades of pink and gold.

A final, exhilarating traverse along the crater rim leads to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). After celebrating your victory, we descend back to Barafu for a quick rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for your final night on the mountain.

The final morning is a gentle three-to-four-hour walk through the rainforest to the Mweka Gate. The air is thick with oxygen, and the path is alive with the sounds of the forest. At the gate, we finalize the park formalities, and you are presented with your official summit certificates.

Our team joins you for a celebratory lunch and the traditional “Kilimanjaro Song,” marking the end of an extraordinary journey. We then provide a private transfer back to your hotel for a long-awaited hot shower and a celebration of your incredible achievement.
