Lemosho Route

Overview

The Lemosho Route is widely regarded by mountaineering experts as the premier path to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. At Alizeti Adventures, our seasoned guides, many of whom have successfully navigated these trails for over a decade, favor this route due to its unparalleled physiological advantages and scenic diversity. Unlike the more direct routes that force rapid elevation gains, the Lemosho approach allows for a gradual ascent that aligns perfectly with human high-altitude biology.

The primary reason for our preference lies in the superior acclimatization profile. Our specific 8-day itinerary results in a 98% summit success rate, ensuring that our guests do not merely attempt the climb but reach the “Roof of Africa” with strength and clarity.

day-day itinerary

Day 1: Londorossi Gate (2,200 m) - Big Tree Camp

The expedition commences at the Londorossi Gate (2,100m), where our team manages all administrative formalities while you enjoy a prepared picnic lunch. The trek begins with a gentle three-to-four-hour walk through the dense montane rainforest. This zone is characterized by ancient camphor trees and vibrant birdlife, including the elusive Hartlaub’s turaco.

Our guides emphasize the “Pole Pole” (slowly, slowly) philosophy from the very first step, ensuring your heart rate remains stable as you transition into the mountain environment. We conclude the day at Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,820m), nestled within the forest canopy.

As we depart from the forest, the terrain shifts dramatically into the heath and moorland zone. The five-to-six-hour trek involves a steady climb over the Shira Ridge before descending onto the Shira Plateau. This ancient caldera offers some of the most expansive views on the mountain, with the glaciated peak of Kibo looming in the distance.

Upon reaching Shira 1 Camp (3,500m), our guides conduct the first of our daily health assessments, utilizing pulse oximeters to monitor your blood oxygen saturation and heart rate, ensuring your body is adapting correctly to the increasing altitude.

While many operators bypass this section, Alizeti Adventures directs the trek toward the secluded Moir Hut (4,200m). This seven-hour journey across the plateau is vital for long-term success. Moir Hut is situated at the base of the Lent Hills, a geological marvel of volcanic outcrops.

This extra night at a higher elevation is our “secret weapon” for acclimatization; it allows your physiology to stabilize at 4,200 meters in a low-stress environment before the more demanding days ahead. The afternoon is spent on a short acclimatization walk into the Lent Hills to further stimulate the body’s adaptive responses.

Day four follows the fundamental mountaineering principle of “Climb High, Sleep Low.” We ascend to the Lava Tower (4,630m), a massive volcanic plug that serves as a critical testing ground for your altitude tolerance. After a hot lunch at the tower, we descend into the lush Barranco Valley.

This descent is crucial, as it provides the body with the “oxygen-rich” recovery it needs after touching the 4,600-meter mark. We set up camp at Barranco (3,940m), famous for its “Garden of Senecios”—giant, prehistoric-looking groundsels that thrive in this unique microclimate.

The morning begins with the conquest of the Great Barranco Wall. Although it appears as a vertical obstacle, it is a non-technical scramble that our guides navigate with expert precision. We refer to this as the “Breakfast Climb,” as it provides an invigorating start to the day.

Once atop the wall, the trail levels out as we cross a series of ridges and valleys in the alpine desert zone. The four-to-five-hour trek concludes at Karanga Camp (3,995m). This shorter day is intentionally designed to allow for physical recovery and mental preparation for the upcoming summit attempt.

The trek to Barafu Camp (4,673m) is a three-to-four-hour ascent through a stark, lunar-like landscape. Barafu, meaning “Ice” in Swahili, serves as our high-altitude base. We arrive by early afternoon to ensure maximum rest. Our guides assist in organizing your summit gear and conduct a final briefing on the nocturnal ascent.

A high-calorie dinner is served at 5:00 PM, followed by mandatory rest. This period is critical; our team ensures you are hydrated and warm, creating the optimal conditions for the final push that begins just before midnight.

At approximately 11:00 PM, the final assault begins. Guided by the glow of headlamps and the rhythmic “Pole Pole” pace of our lead guides, you will ascend the steep scree slopes toward the crater rim. We reach Stella Point (5,756m) as the first light of dawn touches the horizon, a transformative experience that marks the edge of the summit crater.

From here, a final hour-long traverse along the rim brings you to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). After celebrating your achievement at the highest point in Africa, we begin a rapid descent back to Barafu for a brief rest, followed by a final trek down to Mweka Camp (3,100m).

The final morning is a celebratory three-to-four-hour descent through the fragrant rainforest to the Mweka Gate. This lower altitude feels remarkably oxygen-rich, and the walk is a time for reflection on the journey. At the gate, our entire mountain crew gathers for the traditional “Kilimanjaro Song,” a powerful tribute to your perseverance.

After receiving your official gold summit certificates, we provide a private transfer back to your hotel. While the physical trek ends here, the sense of accomplishment and the bond formed with the mountain and our guides remain a lifelong treasure.
